Quick Tip: High-Pitched Noise on Mac Mini M4 Pro? Check Your USB Hub
I recently ran into something that almost drove me insane.
My Mac Mini M4 Pro started emitting a high-pitched noise – noticeable when idling and under load. Not loud, but one of those frequencies you can’t “unhear” once you notice it.
At first, I suspected coil whine from the device itself. But the real culprit was much simpler: a cheap USB hub.
As soon as I unplugged it, the noise was completely gone. Silence.
What’s Going On Here?
These high-pitched noises are usually caused by electrical resonance, often referred to as coil whine. It can come from:
- Poorly shielded power components
- Low-quality voltage regulators in accessories
- Grounding issues between connected devices
- Load-dependent frequency changes (CPU/GPU spikes changing power draw)
A cheap USB hub can introduce noise into the power delivery chain. That noise can then resonate through components – either in the hub itself or even indirectly through your Mac’s circuitry.
Quick Fix
If you hear a similar noise:
- Unplug external devices one by one
- Especially check USB hubs, docks, and chargers
- Replace cheap accessories with higher-quality ones
In my case, removing the USB hub instantly fixed the issue.
Final Thoughts
Not every weird hardware issue is actually your main device. Sometimes it’s just a 15€ accessory ruining your sanity.
If your Mac Mini suddenly starts singing, don’t panic – just start unplugging things.
